Waiting for a Mac Mini? You're not alone.

Stock levels have cratered. Apple's latest desktop is now backordered by three to four weeks in most configurations. The base model? Gone in hours at some retailers.

Why the sudden crunch? Part of it's the AI boom. The new M4 chip handles machine learning tasks without breaking a sweat. Developers and researchers are snapping these up for local inference β€” think running large language models, image generation, AR prototyping. That's new demand Apple didn't fully account for.

But there's another factor. Component prices haven't softened. Memory and storage upgrades cost a premium now, and Apple's pricing reflects it. A fully loaded Mac Mini runs well over $2,000. Even the entry model jumped $100 from last generation.

And here's the kicker: resellers are adding their own markup. Scalpers list the new Mini at 20-30% above retail on eBay. Business buyers are particularly frustrated β€” they need the hardware for AR asset development and on-device AI processing, can't wait weeks.

So what's Apple doing? Production is ramping, but slowly. The transition to in-house silicon has been smooth, but supply chains for advanced packaging remain tight. The Mini's compact design also limits cooling options β€” Apple can't just ship more units without thermal validation.

Don't expect things to normalize soon. Holiday season is around the corner. If you're in the market, order now or prepare to pay a premium. Or wait β€” maybe the next model will have better availability.
